Functional web design – interview with Nastassia Zhuk

Functional web design is often described as a balance between how something looks and how it works. But for Nastassia Zhuk, that balance has a name – functional beauty. In this interview, she shares what drives her creative process, why clarity is the highest form of visual impact, and why she believes the future of design has nothing to do with screens at all. The interview is presented in her own words.

"Clarity is the highest form of visual impact. When data is organized perfectly, it creates a sense of luxury and calm."

How did your journey into design begin, and what continues to inspire your work today?

My journey began with a fascination for how people interact with digital worlds. I’ve always been driven by the idea of functional beauty – where every pixel serves a purpose. Today, I’m inspired by the balance of minimalism and depth. I look at studios like Area 17 and see how they use white space in design and typography to create a premium feel. For me, design is about finding the perfect rhythm between human intuition and digital logic.

What does success in design mean to you personally?

Success is invisible design. It’s when a user achieves their goal effortlessly, without even realizing they are interacting with an interface. I measure success by the lack of friction: if the user feels empowered and calm while using a product, the design has succeeded. It’s about creating an emotional connection through perfect usability.

Which part of the creative process do you struggle with the most?

The most challenging, yet rewarding part, is the distillation – stripping away everything that isn’t essential. It’s hard to let go of a beautiful visual idea if it doesn’t serve the user’s core need. But I believe that killing your darlings is what separates a stylist from a product designer. My goal is to find the shortest path between a user’s intent and their result.

When creating attention-grabbing work, what comes first: clarity, emotion, or visual impact?

Clarity is the foundation. I believe that clarity is the highest form of visual impact. When data is organized perfectly, it creates a sense of luxury and calm. First, I build the logic – clarity. Then I dress it in a premium style – visual impact – to trigger the right feeling of security – emotion.

Have you experienced a design that didn’t turn out as expected?

Yes, earlier in my career I developed an interface that was visually impressive but difficult to implement and navigate. It was a profound lesson: design is a system, not just art. Now I always mentally keep the developer and the end user with me from day one. Every pixel must have a functional reason for its existence.

What future change in the design world excites you the most?

I’m excited about the disappearance of interfaces as we know them. We are moving towards invisible, anticipatory design. I want to build systems that don’t wait for a command but offer a solution based on the user’s specific context. Designing intelligent systems rather than just static screens is the future.

What is one thing you wish you had known before starting your career in design?

I wish I had known that a unique perspective is a designer’s greatest asset. I spent too much time trying to follow standard templates. Now I know: the industry doesn’t need more standard solutions – it needs people who can simplify complexity through their own lens. I would tell myself: trust your discipline and your hunger – they will take you further than any textbook.
