Why have you decided to step into design field? What inspires you and why?

As a teenager I was a member of a big internet forum for video games. At some point I developed an interest in designing signatures (maybe you know these little banners that many had in the signature) for other forum members. This was the first step to get more and more involved with design over the years.

In addition, I learned very early by my uncle to build websites in FrontPage. My first page was a pretty simple one with some info about me, what I thought was cool or interesting at the time and certainly some fancy GIFs.

So I started taking small design jobs beside school to upgrade my pocket money. That was the reason why I decided not to graduate from school and to start an education in design instead. I was sure that it was the right way to do something that would be fun for me and that I would be successful in the long run.

How do you measure the success of your design?

On the one hand I measure the success of the design by how people react to Dribbble and how many views & likes a shot generates. Or if after a redesign by me the users stay longer on the website or the conversion rate increases. However, as a designer you often don’t notice that. But sometimes you get feedback from the client.

I also measure success by the fact that other designers are inspired when I try or dare something new with a design. Always hoping to set a trend and have other designers follow it.

What is your biggest challenge in design creation process?

One of the biggest challenges in the design process for me is to agree on the style that best fits the product and reflects what the product stands for. I often have so many different thoughts in my head and I have to sort them out. Especially in the initial phase of a design. It can happen that I lie in bed in the evening and can’t fall asleep because I’ve so many thoughts and ideas that I would like to put into practice immediately. Then I like to get up again and sit half the night at the computer which is by far the most creative phase of my day.

What principles do you follow when creating attention grabbing design?

I always try to orient myself to the current trends and to create up-to-date designs that people currently like. I like to work with a lot of whitespace and try to draw attention to certain elements with contrasting colors. I think the choice of colors is really one of the most important decisions in the design process.
